Hamburger Burger Tasting – VII
Burgerlich
Diligently, whenever there’s a little blue peeking from behind the clouds, we take advantage of it. We swing ourselves onto our bikes and rattle through Hamburg and its ever-growing burger scene.
After an arduous journey through the city, we walk into the next burger palace for once again a civil - a "bürgerlich" - meal.
The “Burgerlich”, directly by the Domplatz, doesn’t just score highly with creative burger ideas but also with the local ingredients used. Any products used carry the “homemade” label or are produced locally.
Once we enter the restaurant, we are handed a little card that can later be used for the order. From there on, we go directly to the table. After initial skepticism and questioning faces – where is the menu? – we have a classic light bulb moment: A brave push on a notch in the table and lo and behold, a tablet gracefully lifts out of the table before our eyes. Technology these days is fascinating.
The system is logical and easy to understand. We just need to press a few times on the screen and, despite any clumsiness, our order is on its way to the holly cooking grounds. From then on everything goes quickly: Within five minutes the drinks are in front of our noses, and after a further ten minutes the burgers follow.
The homemade basil-flavoured lemonade is wonderfully refreshing, especially on hot summer days.
With the burgers, the only trouble is choosing. This starts with the buns, as three different types are offered. There are the brioche, sesame, and full grain bun, all looking fantastic and featuring a pleasant sweet note. The buns themselves are supplied as dough from a local bakery and then are freshly baked in the restaurant’s kitchen.
But back to the burgers!
A vegetarian burger variation for example is the Portobello Burger with a meaty mushroom patty. The mushroom itself is subtly seasoned, highlighting its own delicious flavour. The burger is rounded off with cream cheese, tomatoes and fried onions. Everything is topped with a spiced tomato ketchup – of course also homemade ;)
Undisputedly there is no burger feast without bacon. Bacon makes us happy, no matter in what form, and in a burger it comes very close to being heaven on earth. The Bacon Burger itself has a medium cooked patty, some Lollo Bionda lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cheddar and – of course – crispy bacon. Deliciously seasoned with tasty Bulls-Eye BBQ Sauce.
The sides to our burgers are two massive bowls of gloriously crunchy chips and allumettes - thin, deep fried potato sicks, resembling matches.
We can also recommend the sauces that come with the tasty potato sticks. Our choices – wasabi, chilli and truffle mayonnaise – were absolutely satisfying. The main components truly stand out, giving the sauces a wonderful flavour.
After we managed to pack everything away and are about to leave the restaurant totally stuffed, we’re offered an apple at the door. As a little vitamin boost but also as a really sweet gesture.
All in all, it was a successful day. We hope that “Burgerlich” will have a great future and continues to bring quality to the table, for us to enjoy.
