BURGER TASTING goes KALIFORNIEN – In & Out Burger

After being on Hollywood Blvd. with scores of other tourists, keeping an eye out for stars, we now find ourselves in In & Out with rumbling stomachs. In & Out is a trendy burger chain in California that everybody is talking about. Even Heidi Klum came here to eat a burger during an episode of Germany's Next Top Model I seem to remember.

The place is pretty full, order numbers are constantly called out and people throng to the counter to pick up their trays. The menu is a light read, there are three burgers and fries. Homemade fries, not all that common in America. We glance behind the counter into the open kitchen and can watch as potatoes are on their way to becoming fries. I remember what Heidi had told her gals: Laaadies, do you know what you have to eat in an In & Out? No? Well, ya order a Double Double with fries and sauce, cheese and onions. Well, sounds quite reasonable to me, and it looked pretty tasty on TV back then.
We order a Double Double and the aforementioned fries and the rest of the menu, it’s not that much after all. With numbers and cold Dr. Peppers in our hands we eagerly watch the trays pass us by, laden with burgers and fries. “199”, yells the boy into his microphone and we get our food.
The hamburger, cheeseburger and double double all look quite similar. The cheeseburger is just like the hamburger but with cheese, and the double double is a double cheeseburger. All three of them look enticing with their soft, slightly browned buns. With the first bite you can immediately taste the sauce and the big, fresh slice of onion. Even the cheese is noticeable straight away, which slightly outshines the meat.
All in all, a super juicy burger with a tasty sauce and fresh, crunchy lettuce. Surprisingly good for a fast food chain. We really like the fries too, especially the ones topped with cheese, sauce and onions. Full and happy we lean back and enjoy the Californian sunshine. Before we head back onto the highway, I quickly buy an In & Out T-shirt and socks, and then we are on our way.
